How to claim your Historic Vehicle (Tax Free) car tax status (updated for 06/04/2015)
The changes in the March 2014 budget announcement including rolling Historic Status, meaning that cars manufactured in 1974 will be eligible for tax free (Historic Vehicle) status from 06/04/2015.
As an owner of course you will be saving some money - £145pa for a 1.3 Marina, or £230pa for a 1.8 Marina at 2015 rates (tbc).
Which cars qualify?
- Cars registered before 01/01/1975 on DVLA V5C form - OR
- Cars manufactured before 01/01/1975, but first registered on or after 01/01/1974 on DVLA V5C form.
- The car must be currently taxed or on SORN, and have a current MOT and Certificateof Insurance.
Depending on when your car was registered there are two different processes to follow.
What do I have to do?
Cars registered in 1974 on the V5C
Step 1 – Get the V5C and go to “Section 7 Changes to current vehicle”, in the line labelled
Tax Class, write in ‘HISTORIC VEHICLE’. Sign the declaration in Section 8.
Step 2 – Take the V5C and your MOT down to the Post Office and they will take the V5C and issue you with a Tax Disk free of charge.
Step 3 – 5-10 days later you will get a new V5C with the taxation class changed from Private Light Goods to Historic Vehicle.
Cars manufactured in 1974 and registered in 1975 on the V5C
Step 1 – Get the V5C and go to “Section 7 Changes to current vehicle”, in the line labelled
Tax Class, write in ‘HISTORIC VEHICLE’. Sign the declaration in Section 8.
Step 2 – Get a letter from the club confirming that the vehicle was manufactured in 1974.
Step 3 – Send the V5C and club letter to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1DZ (please note not usual post code).
Step 3 – 5-10 days later you will get a new V5C with the taxation class changed from Private Light Goods to Historic Vehicle and your new Tax Disk.
Questions?
- Can I change to Historic Vehicle if the car is either not taxed or not insured? – No.
- Can I change to Historic Vehicle if I don’t have a V5 for the car? – No, you’ll need to submit a V55/5 to the DVLA first to get a V5.
- Can I change to Historic Vehicle if the car has lost it’s registration number? – No, there is a different process using a V765 and a different letter from the club.
- In future years, once I have got my new Historic Vehicle V5C can I tax it online? – Yes.
- What if I have a current tax disc, can I get a refund? – Yes, as long as there is more than a month left on it, send a form V14 and your old tax disc to the DVLA.
What do the club charge for a dating letter?
Club Members - £25.00.
